Storyboards and commentary for episode 37 on display at Anime NYC!
The process behind the creation of “Kagurabachi” was on display at the Japan Society booth (produced by MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA) at Anime NYC! We bring you all the details!!

The protagonist, Chihiro, invades the alternate space ruled by the powerful enemy, Kyora Sazanami.
The scene depicts Chihiro approaching the enemy from above in the twisted alternate space with intense force.
The layout is structured so that the right and left pages of the spread first show the protagonist’s perspective from above, followed by the enemy’s perspective from below as they counterattack.

The details of the alternate space, which had been roughly sketched out in the draft, are drawn in fine detail here.
In addition, shots of Hakuri, Chihiro’s ally, were inserted between the action shots, making the battle situation easier to understand.

A close-up of the protagonist’s powerful expression. Other characters silently watching the battle. And then, an explosive special move. This scene combines stillness and movement.

Chihiro’s line, which was originally written as “It’s over, Cloud Gouger.” in the rough draft, was changed to “But as Rokuhira’s property, pull it together. Mei.”
Additionally, on the page where Mei’s lightning attack explodes, the onomatopoeia was intentionally omitted, creating a page that conveys the thunderous sound without any text, further enhancing the effective use of stillness and movement in the storytelling.

The determined expression on Hakuri’s face, Nishiki’s goldfish dancing through the air, and Chihiro powerfully pulling out Enten—all of the elements that make up the charm of this page were already imagined at the storyboard stage. Even the flowing tail of the goldfish swimming beside Chihiro was already decided upon at the storyboard stage.

The final draft, which further refines the composition and staging created in the storyboard, completes the climax of this chapter. This is how Kagurabachi is created.
